Project Management and Leadership

On completion of the course, the participants will:

* Know what Project Management is, its current state, and the existing standards.
* Apply analytical, critical, and creative thinking to complex, uncertain project environments.
* Learn what does and does not work in a research environment and why.
* Learn how to organize work toward a goal.
* Understand the importance of product and project scopes.
* Be able to develop a professional project’s schedule and budget.
* Learn good practices for work communication.
* Understand the leadership and followership processes.

The course develops doctoral-level generic skills in analytical, critical, and creative thinking; communication and interaction; leadership and self-management; and multidisciplinary collaboration, supporting doctoral researchers’ readiness for complex research and professional project environments.

Face-to-face teaching includes 20 hours of lectures, 6 hours of hands-on work, and 26 hours of self-study.

During lectures, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and challenges. In the hands-on sessions, they form ad hoc project teams, create activity-on-node (AON) diagrams, and process maps, identify risks, and influence each other.

As an assignment, participants develop a project management plan that includes goals, project success criteria, a stakeholders list, a scope statement, a risk register, AON diagrams, a schedule, and a communications plan. They may also add a process improvement plan and a budget if they choose.
