After Work film night: Twisted Roots (2009)

The after work film night organised by the Oulu University Library will feature a Finnish drama film Twisted Roots (Väärät juuret) screened at the Tellus Kontinkangas Stage. The screening will feature expert guest professor Solja Niemelä, who will give a talk on the use of cinema in medical education.

In the Finnish drama film Twisted Roots (Väärät juuret) directed by Saara Saarela, the Kuura family is forced to confront the truths they have kept quiet for years when their father's hereditary illness brings everyone together. The film, shot in wintery Oulu, deals with serious topics such as the difficulty of communication, the search for identity and conflicts within the family with compassion and warm sense of humor. The roles include Milka Ahlroth, Pertti Sveholm, Niko Saarela, Silva Robbins and Emma Louhivuori.

Before the film, Solja Niemelä, Professor of Addiction Medicine at the University of Turku, will talk about the topic "Cinema in medical education" (in Finnish). Solja Niemelä has received several teaching awards and has also used cinema in medical education. Niemelä has written an article on the subject for Duodecim Medical Journal: Elokuva lääkärin työkaluna.
