Campus as a Stage: Print, Laser & Light workshops

Are you interested in technology, crafts, or design? Join workshops where creativity, electronics and textiles come together!

What is done in these workshops?

• Explore different types of smart textiles
• Learn to use a variety of materials and tools
• Design and complete your own small smart textile project

Who shoud attend these workshops?

You don’t need to be a coder or a sewing expert – curiosity and willingness to try something new are all you need! These workshops are suitable for beginners and anyone interested in combining technology with craft.

Materials and supplies

All necessary materials will be provided on site. You’re also welcome to bring your own garment or fabric if you would like to add smart features to it.

13.10. & 27.10. Colors that react to light

Would you like to make your clothing or accessory truly unique? Welcome to an inspiring workshop where you can experiment with light‑reactive textile paints and design and print your own decorative pattern onto an item of your choice. You can bring along, for example, a T-shirt, a tote bag, or a cap.

We will guide you from idea to finished piece, so no prior experience is needed. All you need to bring is a touch of creativity! In the end, you’ll take home a personalized item that reacts to light, perfect for the dance floor and sure to turn heads.

3.11. A light‑emitting accessory: laser cutting workshop!

Come and try something different and create your own eye‑catching accessory using technology. In this workshop, you will design and produce an acrylic accessory, such as a bow tie, using laser cutting, and finish it by adding an LED light that makes the piece glow beautifully.

The workshop combines creativity and modern fabrication techniques. You will design the shape and pattern of your product, which will then be precisely cut into acrylic using a laser. Finally, you will add a lighting element that guides light through the surface of the acrylic and turns your piece into a true attention‑grabber.

What you will get to do

10.11. Print your image onto an object – a sublimation workshop!

In this workshop, you will get to explore sublimation printing, where you can print your own photo or design onto a variety of products. Choose your favorite image, such as a photograph, drawing, or graphic design, bring it with you in digital form, and turn it into something for yourself or as a gift, for example a keychain for your overalls or a fridge magnet.

We will guide you throughout the entire process, from image editing to printing, so no prior experience is needed. The workshop provides the products you can print on. The most important thing is your idea, and we will help you bring it to life.

In the workshop you will

· edit your image to prepare it for printing

· learn the basics of sublimation printing

· create your own product from start to finish

· take home a unique and personal result

This workshop series is part of the University of Oulu's Campus as a Stage 2026 culture program. In 2026, the University of Oulu will organize a year-long Campus as a Stage event series, which aims to showcase the broad cultural expertise of our university community and bring culture to everyday life on our campuses and to a wider audience. The series includes cultural lunches, cultural lectures, After Work events, various exhibitions and community art works, and art tours of the university's art collections.
