A day with TEXTaiLES – Discover how AI is transforming the digitization of Cultural Heritage Textiles

Join us for a full-day public event hosted by the TEXTaiLES project at the University of Oulu. Open to everyone, from researchers and heritage professionals to students and curious members of the public, this is a unique opportunity to explore how cutting-edge artificial intelligence and digital tools are revolutionizing the way we study, preserve, and understand textile cultural heritage.

The day is structured in two complementary sessions. The morning is dedicated to presentations and knowledge-sharing, giving attendees a thorough grounding in the TEXTaiLES project, its tools, and its place within the broader European cultural heritage ecosystem. The afternoon shifts into an interactive mode, offering both a hands-on hackathon and an open space for creative engagement.

No prior technical knowledge required, just a curiosity about textiles, heritage, and the technologies that are bringing them into the digital age.

About TEXTaiLES
TEXTaiLES is a European research and innovation project funded under the Horizon Europe program and dedicated to redefining how cultural heritage textile objects are digitised and studied. The project brings together partners across Europe, united by the ambition to build a standardised, AI-powered toolkit for the full digitisation lifecycle of textile artefacts.

TEXTaiLES creates advanced, non-destructive methods that use robots with multiple sensors and the latest AI and machine learning to uncover detailed weaving patterns, find out what causes damage, and piece together broken objects. The project's outcomes will be embedded into the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH), making them accessible to researchers and heritage institutions across Europe.

The Hachathon-like activity
On 3 June 2026, the University of Oulu hosts an open hackathon as part of the TEXTaiLES project's outreach and upskilling activities. This is your opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools developed to digitize and analyse cultural heritage textiles.

During the event, project tools and services will be presented to participants in a live demonstration. Attendees will then form small groups and tackle real tasks using the TEXTaiLES platform, gaining direct, practical experience with digital methods. If you are a researcher, student, cultural heritage professional, or technology enthusiast, this hackathon is designed to build your skills in digitalizing cultural heritage.

Programme:
14.00 - 15.00 - presentation of tools and tasks
15.00 - 16.00 - 1st round
16.00 - 16.15 - coffee break
16.15 - 17.30 - 2nd round
17.30 - 18.00 - Closure and discussion

Who Should Attend?
The hackathon welcomes anyone with a passion for textiles, cultural heritage, artificial intelligence, digitisation, or interdisciplinary research. If you work with historic fabrics, study textile traditions, or are simply curious about how AI can unlock the secrets hidden in woven artefacts, this event is for you. No prior technical expertise is required; the TEXTaiLES partners will guide participants through the tools step by step. We warmly invite textile researchers, conservators, museum professionals, archaeologists, students, and curious members of the public to participate.
