Prinsessa (Princess, 2010) is a Finnish drama film directed by Arto Halonen that quickly became a box-office success after its premiere. The film is based on the true story of Anna Lappalainen, a woman who lived at the Kellokoski Psychiatric Hospital and was known as the “Princess of Kellokoski,” and it portrays her extraordinary life and inner world.

Petteri Pietikäinen is a historian and Professor of the History of Ideas and Learning at the University of Oulu. He specializes in the history of mental health, psychiatry, and so-called deviance, as well as in how the human sciences have been intertwined with social control and social thought. What has been the status and treatment of patients in Finnish mental hospitals at different times?
