Open lecture on domestic violence (in Finnish)

The UN’s Orange the World campaign is held annually from November 25 to December 10 to end violence against women and girls. The campaign’s orange color symbolizes hope for a future where living free from violence is a fundamental right for everyone. The University of Oulu joins the campaign with a public lecture on domestic violence, a student overall patch initiative, and by bringing orange colour to campus screens.

This open lecture will address domestic violence, how to recognize it, and the work done in shelters to support those affected. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 18, from 14:15 to 15:45 via Zoom, and it will be in Finnish. The speakers are Heli Siltala, University Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Oulu, and Tuire Tikkanen, Head of the Domestic Violence Unit at Oulu Mother and Child Home and Shelter.

Heli Siltala’s main research focus is domestic violence and its health impacts, a field she has worked in since 2012. She has also gained practical experience by working for several years with both perpetrators and victims of domestic violence. Her lecture topic is ”Lähisuhdeväkivalta ja sen tunnistaminen”.

Tuire Tikkanen works at the Oulu Mother and Child Home and Shelter, which provides free and voluntary support to all parties affected by family and intimate partner violence — victims, perpetrators, and children and young people — helping them cope with experiences of violence and build safety. Her lecture topic is ”Lähisuhdeväkivaltatyö Oulun ensi- ja turvakodissa”.
