You can bring good and clean clothes to second hand market which is in Linnanmaa, in Business Corner. The second hand market is on a take-and-leave basis. Clothes can be changed for free. There you can also see an information session about recycling clothes organized by Telaketju project at 10 (only in Finnish). The presentation can also be followed remotely. At the end of the day, the rest of the clothes will be delivered to Kontti.

Come and get your bicycle maintenanced for free in the bike care event!

Cycling is an ecological and a healthy way to move around in the city. It is also much more fun and effortless if your bike is in a good condition! Come and get a basic maintenance done on your bicycle on Tuesday 12th of October in front of the R entrance in the Linnanmaa campus. The mechanical engineering freshmen will perform basic maintenance work for bicycles between 10am and 3pm. Maintenance work will be done on as many bicycles as possible, so please be on time.

Are you interested in sustainable development studies? University of Oulu is launching a multidisciplinary minor subject ’sustainable development’ in the autumn 2022. Come and hear more about the upcoming minor on Tuesday 12th October from 12am to 2pm. Make your way to the sustainable development stand in Tellus to hear more and to ask questions about the upcoming minor.

How do we create an inclusive community and practice compassion towards each other in higher education? Guest speaker Anthropologist Kate Kirk speaks on the importance of social inclusion and diversity in the university, an institution of science and education comprised of thousands of humans from different backgrounds. As part of the Sustainable Development Week, this talk will gauge our presumptions about sustainability and offer practices for cultivating compassion in the day-to-day of our university community.

The European University of Post-Industrial Cities (UNIC) is an alliance of 8 universities (including the University of Oulu) that works towards bridging the gaps between academia and our developing cities as well as building an inclusive higher education for our diverse populations across borders.

Speaker introduction:

Antrophologist Kate Kirk is the Diversity and Inclusion Project Lead for Students and Education at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. As a researcher and teacher, Kate works on issues related to diversity and inclusion in higher education. She does this through designing and implementing inclusive education policies based on the principles of compassion and critical reflection. Her research focused on multi-level interpretive analysis of migration and integration policies together with ethnographic research among policymakers and migrants. Her aim is to make academia a more socially safe place to work and study.

Sustainable Development Week presents the film Resource Extraction and Sustainable Artic Communities on Thursday 14th October at 2 pm. Find out new perspectives on climate change and sustainability and have a coffee break at Tellus Linnanmaa, Backstage. Postdoctoral researcher in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oulu Élise Lépy will give us a short introduction into the video and the matter at hand. She has contributed to the screenwriting of the video.

Resource Extraction and Sustainable Arctic Communities (REXSAC) is a Nordic Centre of Excellence and an interdisciplinary research environment aimed at providing new thinking about sustainable development in the Nordic Arctic.

Researchers of REXSAC have published film “Resource Extraction and Sustainable Arctic Communities”.

In the film, they unpack the complexities involved in building sustainability in Arctic areas where a multitude of extractive industries are active, where legacies of past actions influence the present, where changes in the climate strongly impact environments and communities, and where people have widely differing perspectives of what a desirable future looks like.

ABOUT REXSAC:

REXSAC focuses on extractive resource industries in the Arctic as cultural, social, economic, and ecological phenomena – from analysis of why resource extraction commences, to what consequences it has for communities in the Arctic and beyond, and what opportunities exist for transitioning toward post-extractive futures.

REXSAC engages an international network of scholars from across the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Community participation in environmental and social monitoring is also a central part of the REXSAC.
