Workshop for PhD Supervisors: Supporting doctoral competencies, and qualifying the use of AI in doctoral research

Doctoral supervision involves supporting students beyond the research itself, from building the broader competencies doctoral education requires to navigating the emerging challenges of AI. This two-part workshop addresses these two areas through reflection and case-based discussion.

This interactive workshop explores the themes of competence development and qualifying AI use in two parts.

Part 1: Supporting PhD Students' Development of Research Skills and Competencies
This session explores the supervisor's role in fostering the range of competencies doctoral education requires. Participants will discuss how to support progression through key academic milestones, promote professional identity formation, and prepare students for both academic and non-academic careers, alongside reflecting on their own strengths and development needs.

Part 2: Supporting and Qualifying Doctoral Researchers' Use of AI
This session addresses how supervisors can engage with the opportunities and challenges AI presents in doctoral research, including how AI can support learning while raising questions about competence development and research integrity. Participants will examine how to foster critical, responsible, and transparent AI use, and establish clear expectations around its role in research and supervision.

Methods

The interactive workshop is facilitated in English. Discussion is grounded in real cases from supervisors.

Target group

The workshop is aimed at doctoral supervisors at the university. It is relevant to participate whether you have already supervised one or several doctoral researchers or are new to supervision.

Time and location

The workshop takes place online on November 6, 2026, 13:00-16:00. Participants will receive a Teams link after registration.
