Workshop for PhD Supervisors: Values-based PhD supervision, and cross-cultural encounters

Part 1: Values-Based PhD Supervision
How do a supervisor's own values shape their practice, and how do they align with or differ from what today's doctoral candidates often look for, such as meaningful work, transparency, inclusivity, well-being, regular feedback, and independence? Participants will examine how values shape supervisory decisions, communication, expectations, and the supervisory relationship.

Part 2: Cross-Cultural Encounters in PhD Supervision
Supervision among an increasingly international and culturally diverse group of researchers brings both opportunities and challenges. Participants will reflect on their own cultural assumptions and biases, explore differing expectations around authority, feedback, initiative, and independence, and develop strategies for building trust across cultural differences.

Methods

The interactive workshop is facilitated in English. Discussion is grounded in real cases from supervisors.

Target group

The workshop is aimed at doctoral supervisors at the university. It is relevant to participate whether you have already supervised one or several doctoral researchers or are new to supervision.

Time and location

The workshop takes place online on October 1, 13:00-16:00. Participants will receive a Teams link after registration.

Facilitator

Ditte-Marie From is a sociologist of education and certified coach (ICF) specializing in social and mental well-being in academia. She has spent over a decade helping individuals activate their untapped resources to support personal and professional growth, drawing on her own PhD background and years of teaching and supervising PhD candidates. She now runs Academic Coaching as an independent researcher, coach, and workshop facilitator.
