Jarkko Räty to lead Kajaani University Consortium and Unit of Measurement Technology

PhD Jarkko Räty has been selected as the new director of the University of Oulu’s Kajaani University Consortium and its Unit of Measurement Technology. He will take up the position on 11 August 2025, as the current director, Vesa Virtanen, retires later in the autumn.

Räty earned his doctor of philosophy degree in chemistry in 2001. He is currently serving as Research Manager of the Unit of Measurement Technology and has been working in research roles at the University of Oulu since 2006. Prior to that, he worked in development at Kaslink Foods Ltd.

The Kajaani University Consortium is a network-based academic community with the mission of raising the level of education and expertise in its region and supporting local industries through research and education. Coordinated by the University of Oulu, the consortium also includes the Universities of Eastern Finland, Jyväskylä, and Lapland, each with designated areas of responsibility. The Kajaani University Consortium is an independent institute within the University of Oulu.

The Unit of Measurement Technology in Kajaani focuses on developing measurement methods and technologies and provides related services to businesses, research institutes, and other organisations. These are delivered both through jointly funded projects and individual commissions. Key application areas include real-time environmental monitoring, as well as the mining and forest industries. In the field of health and wellbeing, the unit works on the development of online biosensors for human physiological applications, food analytics services, analysis of plant-based value compounds and bioactivity, and the processing of plant materials.
