Academic year 2026–2027 kicks off with culture: opening ceremony at the theatre, professor lectures at the library, and a film premiere

The University of Oulu’s academic year 2026–2027 will be celebrated during the second week of September, 7–13 September 2026. This year, culture plays a prominent role in the opening week’s programme in honour of Oulu’s year as the European Capital of Culture.

This year, the Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2026–2027 will be held at Oulu Theatre on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at 15:00. You can register for the event until Friday, 21 August.

The inaugural lectures of our new professors will take place on Thursday, 10 September at 17:00 at Saari Central Library. Recently appointed professors Teuvo Maunula, Tuija Huuki, Roger Edward Norum, Jouni Juntunen, and Mourad Oussalah introduce their research fields and topics in a clear and engaging way.

On the Saturday of opening week, a new film starring Mika Nuojua will premiere. The movie is about Aapo Heikkilä, a local pseudo-scientist who lectured on orthotopology, a field he invented himself. The first screening of Ortotopologian loputtomat alkeet at 14:00 is free for university staff and students.

Hurmos, the academic year opening event for higher education students in Oulu, spans three days from 9 to 11 September 2026. Organized by the student unions OYY and OSAKO, the event includes a sitsit party in Åström Park, Hurmos Day on the Linnanmaa campus, and a final celebration evening in Kuusisaari.
