Would you like to build a pinball machine? Do you want to customize an old oscilloscope to send data directly to your computer? Do you want to fabricate a remote controlled tripod to show your lab remotely? Would you need a translational microscopic stage for your research, but you could not find funding to buy one?

If you would like to learn how to use Fab Lab equipment to build similar or totally different projects you can attend Fab Academy (https://www.oulu.fi/fablab/fabacademy).

Fab Academy is an intensive five-month program that teaches how to envision, design, prototype and document projects using digital fabrication tools and machines.

The Fab Academy brings together a multi-disciplinary and hands-on learning experience that can be taken in a Fab Lab; at it's core, Fab Academy empowers students to learn by doing, inspires them to make locally, and encourages them to become active participants in sustainable cities and communities.

Fab Academy offers a distributed educational model: students learn in local work-groups (Fab Labs), with peers, experienced mentors, and machines, which are then connected globally in an interactive class, forming a network of 250 students in more than 80 Fab Labs. Hands-on instruction in the labs is provided by Instructors who support students in the utilization of different equipment and processes, and assess the students' work.

Fab Academy provides a unique and fully immersive experience in digital fabrication in one of the founding Fab Labs of the Network.

The course is directed by Neil Gershenfeld from MIT's Center For Bits and Atoms and based on MIT's rapid prototyping course: How to Make (Almost) Anything.
