Arto Maaninen resigns as Rector of the University of Oulu

Arto Maaninen has announced his resignation from the position of Rector of the University of Oulu and has given notice of termination of his employment with the University for personal reasons. At its meeting on 16 June 2026, the University Board decided to grant the resignation from the position of Rector with immediate effect.

The Board will initiate the process of filling the Rector's position in August. The Board appointed Petteri Alahuhtа, Vice Rector for Cooperation, to act as Rector from 16 June until a new Rector takes up the position.

Arto Maaninen's resignation follows a period of deliberation by the University Board regarding its confidence in the Rector. The Board was required to consider the matter of confidence owing to Maaninen's use of alcohol and inappropriate conduct at a University staff event.

"The situation is unexpected and regrettable. This decision is, however, the one that ensures the University of Oulu upholds its values and ethical principles at all levels of the organisation. I thank Arto Maaninen for his work as Vice Rector and Rector of the University. I wish to emphasise that the question of confidence was not related to University decision-making or its preparation," says Leena Nissilä, Chair of the University Board.
