Associate Professor Vahid Javaheri Served as Opponent in Doctoral Defence at Tampere University

Associate Professor Vahid Javaheri from the University of Oulu acted as an opponent in the public examination of the doctoral dissertation of MSc (Tech) Shahroz Ahmed at Tampere University on 18 September 2026.

The dissertation, entitled “Tensile Behavior of Intercritically Annealed Medium Manganese Steels,” was conducted in the field of Materials Science and examined how heat-treatment conditions influence the microstructure, mechanical properties and deformation behaviour of medium-manganese steels.

The research combined advanced microstructural characterization with mechanical testing and synchrotron X-ray measurements to provide deeper understanding of the mechanisms controlling the strength–ductility balance of these advanced steels. The findings contribute to the development of stronger and more formable steels with potential applications in lightweight and sustainable transportation.

Professor Javaheri participated in the academic examination together with Professor Pedro Vilaça from Aalto University, while Professor Pasi Peura from Tampere University served as Custos. As an opponent, Professor Javaheri evaluated the scientific quality of the dissertation and engaged the doctoral candidate in a public academic discussion covering the research methodology, interpretation of the results, and broader significance of the work.

The appointment reflects the University of Oulu’s active contribution to doctoral education and scientific collaboration in the field of advanced steels and materials engineering.
