The course teaching modes visible to students
Starting from autumn 2026, the new teaching modes at the University of Oulu are face-to-face, blended, hybrid, scheduled online, and self-paced. Students will be able to see the teaching mode of a course both in Peppi and Tuudo.
The update of teaching modes for course implementations at the University of Oulu (previously teaching profiles: online, blended/flexible, face-to-face) was carried out in autumn 2025. The goal was to create a clearer and more transparent classification that supports students in planning their studies, helps teachers communicate the participation requirements for teaching, and assists degree programs in managing the overall structure of teaching modes.
The teaching mode classification will be introduced for every course. The teaching modes are: contact teaching, blended learning, hybrid, scheduled online, and self-paced flexible learning.
See the new teaching modes below. You can also find them on the page Curriculum.
Face-to-Face (lähi)
- This mode is organised mainly or entirely on campus.
- As a student, you attend and actively participate in in-person teaching sessions, in between which you study independently and/or in groups.
- This mode also includes, for example, internships and field implementations, which may take place outside the campus.
Blended (monimuoto)
- This mode includes both in-person and online teaching. For example, two in-person sessions on campus plus others remotely.
- As a student, you actively participate in real-time teaching sessions both on campus and online, and study independently and/or in groups between meetings.
Hybrid (hybridi)
- Some students are on campus, some participate remotely at the same time.
- As a student, you actively participate in real-time teaching sessions, choosing either on campus or online mode, and study independently and/or in groups between meetings.
Scheduled Online (Aikataulutettu verkko)
- Instruction is organised entirely online and follows a set schedule. You need a good internet connection, headphones, microphone, and camera.
- As a student, you actively participate in real-time online teaching sessions, and study independently and/or in groups between meetings.
- Exams in online studies may also be organised in EXAM rooms.
Self-paced (Joustavasti omaan tahtiin)
- Mainly independent study. As a student, you plan your own schedule; the implementation does not include regular in-person or real-time remote meetings.
- The mode may include optional scheduled meetings (e.g., tutoring) and/or scheduled meetings agreed upon with the student (e.g., guidance).
- There may be a set deadline for completion.
