28 nationalities. More graduates. A globally recognized program.

The joint European master's program, shortened as PROMISE, educates world-class mineral processing experts and future leaders to secure a sustainable future for the mining industry.

PROMISE is more than a Master’s program. It is a bridge between continents, a driver of innovation, and a builder of careers—equipping the next generation of experts with the knowledge and skills the world urgently needs.

Why PROMISE matters:

  • Stronger Together – PROMISE partners reaffirmed their commitment to continue the program, launching its 5th student intake and preparing for a new grant application to secure its long-term future.

  • Impact at Scale – PROMISE delivers 75–90% more graduates than comparable programs, reducing Europe’s skills gap in mineral processing and directly supporting the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act).

  • Excellence & Inclusivity – With a focus on gender balance, inclusiveness, and internationalization, PROMISE has already welcomed students from across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Students from 28 nationalities are the beneficiaries of EMJM-PROMISE scholarship.

  • Opportunities Beyond Borders – Erasmus Mundus scholarships ensure accessibility for talented students worldwide. Partner universities continue to waive tuition fees, while new sponsorships and external funding mechanisms are being developed to support non-EEA students.

  • Institutional Commitment – University of Oulu elevates Vesa-Matti Sarenius, Director of Academic Affairs, to Advisory Board level, ensuring leadership at the highest ranks, ensuring decision-making at the highest academic level.

  • Leadership & Vision – Thanks to the initiative of the main coordinator, Maria Sinche-Gonzalez, PROMISE started and has grown into a flagship program. Continued support for her role ensures strong management and the lasting success of the program.
