Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit Joins Centre for Advanced Steels Research

The Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit (FPERU) at the University of Oulu has joined the Centre for Advanced Steels Research (CASR). FPERU focuses on sustainable inorganic and bio-based materials within the circular and bioeconomies, with active research in the area of slag utilization and modification for cement applications. FPERU has 46 researchers in the Inorganic materials for circular economy research theme area which makes them one of the largest research groups in this field.

"The importance of utilizing and valorizing slags in modern steelmaking cannot be overstated. FPERU has an excellent track record in studying the use of steelmaking slags as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). With their expertise, CASR can now offer a broader range of slag-related research ranging from the performance of slags in metallurgical processes to the development of slag-based products. We are very happy to have them on board," says Ville-Valtteri Visuri, chairman of the executive board of CASR.

“Steel and cement industries have existing synergy, and we expect this synergy to deepen in the future. Thus, joining CASR is an important network of experts for us to do impactful research and to help lower CO2 emissions of both cement and steel industries,” notes Associate Professor Juho Yliniemi from FPERU.
