The final scientific intensive course of I4WORLD focused on Future perspectives for imaging and characterisation methods
The course was mandatory for the 25 doctoral researchers participating in the I4WORLD programme and was also open to doctoral researchers from across the University of Oulu. Course placed particular emphasis on the doctoral researchers' own research projects but also included expert keynote lectures. Participants presented their work within three broad thematic areas:
- Environment and Health
- Industry and Production
- Energy and Industry
The course featured four distinguished keynote speakers who provided interdisciplinary perspectives on current developments and future opportunities in imaging and characterisation:
- Professor Dierk Raabe, Managing Director, Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials (remote): Atom Probe Tomography & Correlative Microscopy
- Elizabeth Carter, Research Coordinator, Digital Waters Flagship, University of Oulu: Crowdsourcing Hydrologic Reasoning: the DIWA Digital Twin
- Professor Johannes Kettunen, Research Unit of Population Health and Scientific Director of Biocenter Oulu: Biobank-Scale Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology
- Veijo Honkimäki, Scientist in Charge and Head of the Structure of Materials Group, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF): Imaging at ESRF
A key objective of the final intensive course was to provide doctoral researchers with an opportunity to showcase their research, including methods, results, challenges, and best practices developed during their doctoral studies. In addition to presenting their own work, all participants acted as opponents for their peers, encouraging constructive discussion and creating valuable opportunities to learn from research conducted in other disciplines as well.
The course marked the conclusion of the scientific intensive course series within the I4WORLD (Imaging and Characterisation for a Sustainable World) doctoral programme co-funded by the European Union.
