H2FUTURE Finland–North America Visiting Programme is open
H2FUTURE Finland–North America Visiting Programme aims to strengthen long-term scientific collaboration, create new research partnerships and bring together complementary expertise in the core research areas of H2FUTURE. Programme supports research visits by professors and postdoctoral researchers from universities and research organisations across North America to the University of Oulu.
The call is open on a continuous basis until the allocated programme funding has been fully used.
About H2FUTURE
Hydrogen future as a climate solution (H2FUTURE) combines combines the University of Oulu’s research strengths in future hydrogen production, sustainable metals reduction processes and hydrogen-resistant steel development into a multidisciplinary research community supporting the transition towards sustainable hydrogen technologies.
H2FUTURE builds on fundamental research in physics, chemistry, process metallurgy, physical metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Its research covers, among other areas, energy-efficient and climate-neutral hydrogen production, fossil-free metals production, hydrogen utilisation, and the development of advanced materials and steels for the hydrogen transition.
H2FUTURE is one of the University of Oulu’s profiling actions supported by the Research Council of Finland.
About the H2FUTURE Finland–North America Visiting Programme
The H2FUTURE Finland–North America Visiting Programme provides an opportunity for leading professors and postdoctoral researchers based at universities and research organisations in North America to conduct research visits at the University of Oulu.
The programme is designed to foster strategic international collaboration and bring complementary expertise to the H2FUTURE research community. It aims to catalyse high-quality joint research, strengthen international academic networks and establish long-term partnerships addressing key scientific challenges related to sustainable hydrogen technologies, hydrogen production, fossil-free metals production and hydrogen-resistant materials.
Visiting researchers will collaborate closely with University of Oulu research teams and have access to the University’s research infrastructure, multidisciplinary research environments and scientific expertise.
Funding can be applied for either:
a) directly by a researcher based at an eligible North American institution; or
b) by a University of Oulu Principal Investigator (PI) who wishes to invite a named researcher from North America to collaborate on H2FUTURE-related research.
The visiting researcher and the University of Oulu host unit must follow the University of Oulu visiting researcher guidelines (internal link for University of Oulu hosts).
Visits may last between two weeks and six months.
Funding may cover:
- travel and accommodation costs of up to €3,000 for short-term visits
- travel and accommodation costs of up to €8,000 for longer visits
Salaries, daily allowances and conference participation costs are not covered.
A detailed budget must be included in the application. Approved costs will be reimbursed based on receipts and in accordance with University of Oulu travel and financial regulations.
A support or invitation letter from the University of Oulu host unit is required.

Applications should be submitted through the online Webropol application form. The application form requests the following information:
In the application form, you are requested to fill in the following information:
- Contact details of the visiting researcher
- Details of the University of Oulu host unit and hosting investigator
- Planned dates and duration of the visit
- Amount of funding requested
- Required annexes
Applications must be submitted in English and include the following documents:
1. Motivation letter and project description
A maximum three-page description covering:
- motivation for the research visit
- objectives of the proposed collaboration
- added value of the visit for the researcher, the University of Oulu host team and the H2FUTURE programme
- expected scientific and other outcomes
- expected benefits for longer-term collaboration between the institutions
- research plan, methods and planned activities
- work plan and schedule for the visit
The application should clearly explain how the proposed collaboration contributes to the research themes and scientific objectives of H2FUTURE.
2. Budget
A detailed budget for the visit, indicating the travel and accommodation costs requested from H2FUTURE and any costs covered through other funding sources.
3. Hosting commitment or invitation letter
A commitment or invitation letter from the hosting Principal Investigator at the University of Oulu.
4. Curriculum vitae
CV, maximum four pages, prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity.
5. List of publications
A list of publications prepared according to the guidelines of the Research Council of Finland.
Deadline
There is no fixed deadline. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for research visits taking place during the remaining H2FUTURE programme period, or until the funding reserved for the visiting programme has been fully allocated.
Decisions
Applications are evaluated by the H2FUTURE Management Group.
We aim to communicate the funding decision within approximately one month of receiving a complete application.
