Millog and the University of Oulu’s 6G Test Centre launch cooperation to promote dual-use technology development
Millog Oy and the University of Oulu’s 6G Test Centre have signed a cooperation agreement that significantly expands testing opportunities for developers. Users of the 6G Test Centre will also have access to Millog’s test environment in Riihimäki, where technologies are assessed against defence field requirements. Together, Millog and 6G Test Centre are creating Europe’s most advanced multi-domain testing ecosystem to accelerate the development of dual-use technologies for both civilian and defence applications.
Millog’s strong expertise in defence domain makes it an important bridge between technology companies and the defence field. At its test centre, operating in collaboration with the Define (Defence Innovation Network Finland) Innovation Hub, Millog helps companies test dual-use innovations and prototypes in both digital and physical environments that simulate real operating conditions.
The 6G Test Centre at Oulu offers advanced facilities, services and processes for wireless communication research and commercial testing. It is part of NATO’s DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) network of test centres, which aims to identify future defence challenges and develop innovative technological solutions in collaboration with industry.
At the 6G Test Centre, users have access to world-class, rare radio frequency measurement equipment, enabling all measurements and testing related to 6G technology development to be carried out in one location. The centre’s use of 6G frequencies and large antenna arrays supports research that combines communication and sensing. 6G Test Centre operates its own 5G and 6G test network, which enables versatile and realistic trial and demonstration environments for future communication technologies.
"Research on 6G antennas, radios and integrated RF circuits can currently be conducted in Oulu at frequencies up to 330 GHz. The centre also includes a large RF anechoic chamber and RFIC sensor stations, which are essential for successful radio testing", explains Hannu Nikurautio, Director of 6G Test centre from the University of Oulu.
According to Nikurautio, the partnership with Millog complements and strengthens the 6G Test Centre’s already extensive offering.
"Millog serves as a natural partner particularly in demanding field and operational environments. Together, we are able to deliver a DIANA-level TEVV (Test, Evaluation, Validation and Verification) framework from laboratory to field and into full operational validation", Nikurautio says.
"This collaboration enhances significantly the development of dual-use technologies both in Finland and internationally. Through agile testing and validation, we can accelerate the deployment of new solutions across Finland’s and allied defence systems, in line with NATO’s innovation and rapid adaption, RAAP (Rapid Adoption Action Plan) principles", continues Toni Piispa, Vice President, Authorities and Industry Business Unit, Millog Oy.
