Project for the new Teacher Training School building moves to tendering phase
The new school building will be located in the north-west corner of the Linnanmaa campus area, on a site owned by University Properties of Finland Ltd (SYK). A building permit has been granted, and SYK has begun earthworks on the site. Trees were removed already in March, prior to the start of the bird nesting season.
The new building is designed for 600 pupils including basic education grades 1–9 of the University of Oulu Teacher Training School. The goal is to start studies in the new building in August 2028. Pupils in the Linnanmaa unit have partly been studying in temporary facilities since autumn 2024.
“We are pleased with the plan and the collaboration during the process. The chosen location is safe for pupils and offers good transport connections, while also bringing basic education closer to the upper secondary school,” says Sari Ahola, Leading Rector of the University of Oulu Teacher Training School.
During the past year, concrete implementation plans for the new school building have been completed. Staff from the Teacher Training School have been extensively involved in the planning work.
“The property has been designed with the users’ needs in mind. As the tendering of the construction work now begins, we expect high quality. The building’s load-bearing frame must last the next 50 years and its foundations the next 100 years,” says Juha Waulu, Head of Maintenance Services at the University of Oulu.
The University of Oulu would become a tenant of SYK in the new building. In May 2026, SYK’s Board of Directors will make a decision on the investment, and the University of Oulu’s Board of Directors on the signing of the lease agreement. The University of Oulu Teacher Training School is part of the City of Oulu’s school network.
