Researchers’ Night 2026 with I4WORLD

Researchers’ Night 2026 was filled with creativity, curiosity, and discovery as the University of Oulu invited people of all ages to explore the world of science. Held on the last Friday of September each year, the event is part of a Europe-wide science celebration and Finland’s largest science event.

Our I4WORLD researchers participated in the event for the third time and hosted a workshop called From Tiny Discoveries to a Sustainable Future.

Through hands-on activities and playful experimentation, I4WORLD researchers Ifra Arif, Abrar Hussain Mian, Shreya Pandey, and Julson Tchio demonstrated how imaging and characterization methods are helping address sustainability challenges and shape a more sustainable future.

Visitors had the opportunity to build creative robots, explore moss through a microscope, and create all kinds of imaginative objects using magic wet cement.

In Julson Tchio’s words, introducing children to the world of magic cement and alternative binders in construction is not the easiest topic to tackle. The hands-on activities sparked great enthusiasm among the children. Watching their excitement as they explored materials that researchers spend years studying highlighted the value of science communication and its power to inspire the next generation.

When asked which part of the workshop seemed to excite the children the most, Ifra Arif said it was definitely the robot activity.

“The visitors were very curious and happy about building their own creative robots. It was lovely to see children working together, experimenting with different ideas, asking questions, and proudly showing each other what they had created. “Ifra says.

For her, the moment that best captured the spirit of Researchers’ Night was seeing children and parents working together on a shared creative task.
