University of Oulu ranked highest among Finnish universities in TIME magazine’s new outcomes-focused university ranking

TIME’s ranking assesses universities across three areas: academic capacity & performance, innovation and economic impact, and global engagement. The University of Oulu has strong results in science, innovation and impact, which helps to explain its excellent position in this particular ranking.

In terms of academic capacity & performance, the ranking evaluates the resources universities allocate to teaching and research, as well as outcomes in scientific work and academic excellence. Indicators include, among others, resource expenditure per student, research income per faculty member, institutional income, as well as publication activity and citation impact, the presence of highly cited researchers, and Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. Academic capacity & performance accounts for 60% of the overall score.

For innovation and economic impact, the ranking looks at universities’ contributions to advancing science and technology and disseminating knowledge, as well as their influence on economic decision-making through graduates’ career paths. Indicators include, among others, patents and their impact, open massive open online courses, university web traffic, and graduates progressing into corporate leadership roles. Innovation and economic impact account for 30% of the overall score.

The ranking assesses universities’ global engagement by measuring, among other things, the share of international students and staff, as well as the international attention received by the university. Global engagement accounts for 10% of the overall score.
