You still have time to apply as a tutor! Read why 99% recommend it and apply by 8 Feb
“Becoming a tutor is definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I got to meet so many new people – not only first-year students, but I also made many new friends among other tutors. I think it’s great to be able to help new students on their journey into university life!”
Have you thought about becoming a tutor or a kummi student? Did you know that 99% of those who responded to the autumn 2025 tutor feedback survey would recommend becoming a tutor to a fellow student? One of last autumn’s tutors summed it up like this: “A unique opportunity for an experience you can’t really get anywhere else.”
So what is tutoring really like, and why should you apply? We asked last autumn’s tutors and exchange student kummis to share their experiences
Why become a tutor?
As a tutor, you can:
- meet new people and make new friends – even from around the world
- gain valuable experience for working life
- develop skills such as interaction, planning and organization, guidance, communication, and presentation skills
- as a tutor for international students, broaden your worldview, improve your language skills, and gain international competence
“A great experience also in terms of working life skills.”
“Tutoring increased my confidence and strengthened my understanding of what kind of employee I am.”
As a tutor, you also receive:
- compensation for your work
- a digital badge (certificate) awarded by the university
- study credits for tutoring (depending on the faculty)
- training for the role and support throughout the tutoring period
Who can apply to become a tutor or a kummi?
You can apply to become a tutor even during your first year. Tutors are often second- or third-year students, but you can also apply later in your studies. For master’s programmes, we especially seek master’s-level tutors.
A good tutor is:
- diligent and responsible
- committed to their role and willing to dedicate time to tutoring
- sufficiently advanced in their studies
Most importantly, however, you should be genuinely motivated and eager to help new students!
“The best part is getting to follow the beginning of new students’ journeys and being able to support them :)”

Students say that many different kinds of people can succeed as tutors or kummis. You don’t need to be a certain “type” – openness, curiosity to meet new people, and the courage to lead by example all help in the role.
“Tutoring was an opportunity to develop myself together with new people.”
“You can learn something valuable about yourself and others.”
Wondering how much time tutoring takes?
Tutoring can be adjusted to fit your own study schedule. However, before applying, it’s important to consider your timetable and whether you can commit the time required.
“Based on my experience, it gave more than it took.”
On the application website, you can learn more about what tutoring and preparation for the task involve.
“In the end, it’s quite low-threshold – you don’t need to know everything.”
As a tutor or kummi, you’ll receive support from other tutors, your faculty’s and degree programme’s contact persons, and the university’s tutoring coordinators.
