Joshua Schaaf is a doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, working mainly on the Next Generation Sensing project (NGSens) under Dr. Simo Saarakkala, Dr. Aki Manninen, and Dr. Jian-an Huang. His Bachelor's (biochemistry, minor in computer science, BSc) and Master's (bioinformatics, PSM) degrees are from Temple University in Philadelphia PA, USA. Josh worked as a bioinformatics programmer analyst in a cancer proteomics lab in Virginia before deciding to start a PhD at the University of Oulu.

Josh's current research includes researching and developing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based biosensors for sub-cellular spatial detection of molecules. Utilization of SERS may possibly provide single-molecule sensitivity, while the usage of biological probes could provide high specificity.
