Miikka Väisälä

Miikka Väisälä is a postdoctoral researcher working in generative AI, with a particular focus on LLM-based applications and agentic systems. He is also interested in local AI deployment and development, rather than relying solely on external APIs. His central aim is to strengthen the research and adoption of generative AI within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), connecting the field's latest methods to concrete research questions and growing the faculty's expertise in the area.

Miikka's background is in computational astrophysics. He completed his PhD in astronomy at the University of Helsinki in 2017 and has worked with GPU-accelerated computing (CUDA, OpenCL) since its earliest days. This has built deep, hands-on experience in high-performance computing that continues to shape how he approaches AI systems.

From 2018 to early 2025, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) in Taiwan, fostering international research collaborations across multiple continents. This combination of rigorous numerical-methods expertise and large-scale simulation work forms the basis for a systems-engineering view of AI, the attitude that values reproducibility, efficiency, and real research impact over passing trends.
