MSc. Sustainable and Autonomous Systems
Doctoral Researcher

Materials and Mechanical Engineering
Faculty of Technology

Shalika Dulaj Amarathunga is a Doctoral Researcher in the Machine and Vehicle Design (MVD) research group at the University of Oulu, having previously served as a Research Assistant and a Project Researcher in the same group. He holds a master’s degree in Sustainable and Autonomous Systems from the University of Oulu, a postgraduate diploma in Industrial Automation from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. Also, he has five years of industry experience as an Automation Engineer.

His current research targets the power optimization of heavy hybrid vehicles through intelligent energy management and advanced dynamics control. Using deep reinforcement learning, he is developing control frameworks to optimize hybrid powertrain efficiency while extending battery life. He has also developed a state estimation model using sensor fusion, implementing real-time slip angle algorithms for off-road vehicles with integrated GNSS and IMU sensors. His technical interests cover control system architecture, advanced PLC programming, and data-driven methods for autonomous vehicles.

Research interests
