Sigga-Marja Magga
PhD
Leader of the Giellagas Institute, university lecturer, docent
Sámi handicrafts and cultural heritage
I have been working as the director of the Giellagas Institute since 2024. I am a university lecturer in Sámi culture and a docent of duodji, or Sámi handicraft. In my research, I examine the changes and power relations of Sámi society that are structured through duodji, the manifestations and meanings of gender, normativity and spirituality. My perspective is focused on dialogue between personal and community-based experience and the academic world. I am actively involved in various projects that aim to develop the Sámi's social and cultural inclusion. Among other things, I was part of a working group that in 2024 completed the first ethical guidelines for Sámi research in Finland. The ethical guidelines were prepared in close cooperation with the Sami communities.
