Zahra Sarmadian

I am a PhD researcher under the supervision of Professor Ali Mobasheri in the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu. I have held this position full-time since September 2023 in the FibroHealth – Combatting Fibrosis in Chronic diseases and Fibrobesity multidisciplinary research programmes supported by the Academy of Finland PROFI6 funding during 2021-2026.

I hold a BSc. in Medical Laboratory Sciences from the Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran; and an MSc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine from the University of Oulu, Finland. As a biochemist with over 4 years of experience in clinical and research labs, I bring a strong background in conducting cellular and molecular tests, designing and executing research projects, and interpreting results.

My main research area is studying cartilage biology and its secretomics analysis. Moreover, I am carrying out research on Osteoarthritis pathogenesis and in-vitro joint-on-chip models to find a link between cartilage degeneration, fibrosis and obesity.

Research interests

  • Cartilage biology
  • Immunometabolism in cartilage
  • Development of biomimetic in vitro models of cartilage
  • Biochemical markers of Osteoarthritis
  • Effects of obesity on Osteoarthritis development
