Research assessment

Universities Act provides that universities must evaluate their research activities on a regular basis. In the University of Oulu, the university level Research Assessment Excercise (RAE) is performed every six years as an international scientific peer review. In addition, the multidisciplinary focus institutes of the university are evaluated by international expert panels every four years.

RAE2020

The latest Research Assessment Exercise by the University of Oulu was carried out in 2019-2020 (RAE2020). All the 57 research units of the university, including Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, Kajaani University Consortium and and Kerttu Saalasti Institute participated in the evaluation.

The purpose of RAE2020 evaluation was to produce an overall picture of the quality, strengths, social and scientific impact, and focal points of the scientific research of the university. It also aimed to identify opportunities for development and assist in recognizing future research prospects.

The research was evaluated by three field-specific scientific panels.

  • Life sciences, health and the environment
  • Culture and society
  • Natural sciences and technology

The evaluation was based on the research groups’ self-assessments, scientific action plans, bibliometric analyses and interviews. The bibliometric analyses were produced in collaboration with CWTS Leiden and the Oulu University Library, and two separate bibliometric analyses were produced.

The RAE2020 report presents the results of the evaluation from research unit level to university level. In two bibliometric reports the analyses are presented at the faculty- and university level.

The RAE2020 report and the bibliometric reports can be loaded through the links below starting from Tuesday 2 Nov at 12.30 o'clock:
