Research assessment

At the University of Oulu, research assessment is a key tool for supporting excellence, strategic development, and future research opportunities. In accordance with the Finnish Universities Act, the University regularly evaluates its research activities through international peer review. The university-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is conducted every six years.

Research Assessment Exercise 2026 (RAE2026)

RAE2026 is the University of Oulu’s current institutional research assessment, bringing together international experts to evaluate the quality, impact, vitality, and future potential of research conducted across the 43 research units and 3 separate units of the university.

The exercise provides an independent international perspective on the university’s research strengths and development opportunities. The assessment supports evidence-based strategic decision-making and contributes to the continuous enhancement of research quality, research environments, and societal impact.

As a research-intensive international university, the University of Oulu sees research assessment as an opportunity for reflection, learning, and renewal. RAE2026 helps identify emerging areas of excellence, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and support the university’s long-term vision of creating knowledge for a more sustainable, intelligent, and healthier world.
