Centre for Wireless Communications
CWC conducts cutting-edge research on the development and optimization in the fields of wireless networking and network architectures, radio access networks, physical, link and MAC layer technologies, signal processing, algorithms, optimization, machine learning, sensing, and localization, access control, network security, system and service designs for complex vertical ecosystems, transceiver technologies, RF IC design, baseband architectures and RF/antenna implementations, instrumentation, measurements, and channel modelling; and machine-type communications (MTC), internet of things (IoT), non-terrestrial connections and critical communications.
These individual topics are extended to a broader perspective by incorporating wireless systems and technology sustainability, standardization, regulation, and business-technology research, the creation of a 6G Test Network, and the utilization of large-scale trials for vertical application use cases. The comprehensive research agenda is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also makes direct contributions to the ITU-R (International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector) regulatory processes.
The unit leads the National Research Infrastructure for Future Wireless Communication Networks project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, as well as the 6G Flagship programme.
