In Swedish municipalities where Swedish is the first official language, a good level of fluency is a requirement for employment.
Swedish – Svenska
The official languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish. This is prescribed by the law.
Swedish language studies are included in the degree requirements of universities and universities of applied sciences if the mother tongue and language of education of the student is or has been Finnish. On the other hand if the mother tongue and the language of education has been Swedish, then the contrary is true.
The Swedish courses are designed for intermediate and advanced level students and the Swedish courses are tailored to meet the language needs of the university academic degree programs as well as the needs of the professional working life. Elementary courses are not offered in Swedish.
Students who have completed secondary school (high school) in a language other than Finnish or Swedish are exempted from completing Swedish language requirements. (Please, contact your department study advisor for exemption.)
