Collaboration with research institutes and industry

State Research Institutes

Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is a research agency of Finland’s Ministry of Employment and the Economy with several hundred emploees divided into four regional offices (Espoo, Kuopio, Kokkola, Rovaniemi). Collaboration between GTK and the University of Oulu is active encompassing teaching, joint research projects and the Finland Geosciences Research Laboratory (SGL = Suomen geotieteiden tutkimuslaboratorio), which is a joint facility of Helsinki, Oulu, Aalto and Turku Universities, Åbo Akademi, and GTK.

Other state research institutes include the multitechnological Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH).

Mining industry

Significant partners in the mining technology and mineral processing include: Outotec, Metso, Sandvik, Normet, Schneider Electronics

Mining companies with which collaboration has been carried out recently include Outokumpu (Kemi Mine), Gold Fields Arctic Platinum (Suhanko prospect), Terrafame Oy, Anglo American (Sakatti prospect), Agnico Eagle (Kittilä Mine), Boliden (Kevitsa Mine), First Quantum Minerals (Pyhäsalmi Mine), Yara, Sotkamo Silver Oy, Dragon Mining (Kuusamo prospect, Orivesi Mine). The Pyhäsalmi and Kittilä Mines have organized an annual mining course for several years jointly for geology students from several universities.

University Collaboration

OMS has educational collaboration with the Luleå University of Technology. Part of the advanced courses in mineral processing can be done in Luleå. In both geosciences and mineral processing, a double degree agreement was signed between Luleå and Oulu in 2011.
