Kaisa toimii tutkijatohtorina Suomen Akatemian rahoittamassa projektissa “Post-war constructions of youth social problems – Policing youth, gender and delinquency in Finland, 1945–1970“ (2010-2014). Vehkalahden tutkimus on liittynyt laajasti lapsuuden ja nuoruuden historiaan, nuorisotutkimukseen, tyttötutkimukseen, lastensuojelun historiaan, 1900-luvun historiaan ja kirjoittamisen kulttuurihistoriaan. Väitöskirjassaan (Constructing Reformatory Identity. Girls’ Reform School Education in Finland, 1893–1923. Peter Lang, 2009) hän käsitteli suomalaisten kasvatuslaitosten historiaa.
