The course is intended for doctoral researchers who have some prior exposure to population genetics and wish to develop a deeper understanding of the theoretical and statistical principles underlying population genomic analyses.
Education description
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the fundamental population genetic principles underlying commonly used methods for analysing genomic data, including the site frequency spectrum (SFS), coalescent theory, and F-statistics
- explain the main assumptions and calculations underlying commonly used population genetic analyses and relate them to their implementation in analytical software
- interpret results from genomic analyses of genetic diversity, population differentiation, and demographic history using population genetic theory
- compare alternative approaches for analysing population genomic data and explain their advantages, limitations, and assumptions
- critically evaluate the output of population genetic software rather than treating analytical methods as “black boxes”
