Doctoral Writing Toolkit: The Art and Craft of Writing for Emerging Scholars

The course is organized as a combination of lectures (10h), seminars (10h), and independent work.

In the autumn term, all the contact teaching is organized as face-to face in Linnanmaa campus.
In the spring term, the course is offered in the scheduled online mode.

This course provides doctoral researchers with essential tools and perspectives to navigate the complexities of scientific writing. The course explores writing as a site of knowledge creation and sociocultural, discipline-specific practice through which researchers become members of academic community.

By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper awareness of scientific writing as both a process and a product, along with some practical strategies for developing their academic voice within a supportive scholarly environment. The course aims to lay foundations, which will empower researchers to build their professional skills further in the process of their doctoral studies. As such it is recommended to complete the course at the early stages of the studies. Various forms of pedagogical engagement, including flexible use of English and Finnish, are used in the implementation of the course.

The course is organized as a combination of lectures (10h), seminars (10h) and independent work. Participants are expected to attend and participate actively in all the teaching sessions. Seminar work will be organized in small groups formed at the beginning of the course. There will be small tasks to complete in preparation for each seminar, including for example reflection essay, reading reflection, preparation of peer-feedback or text analysis.

By completing the whole course participants can gain 2 credits. It is also possible to complete only the lecture part and gain 0.5 credit.

Learning materials will be provided by the teachers in the electronic form in the Moodle platform.

Continuous evaluation is utilized throughout the course.

For 0,5 cr. active participation in the lectures (min 80%), including small group interactive activities, and completion of the reflection essay is required.

For 2 cr., in addition to the above, completion of all the pre-seminar tasks (e.g. reflective essays, peer-reviews, reading journal), and active participation in the seminars (min 80%), which include multidisciplinary group discussions, peer-mentoring and interaction in the multilingual teaching/learning environment, is required.

Language of instruction: The course will be taught bilingually, using flexibly Finnish and English. Knowledge of Finnish language is not necessary.
