Students will be selected based on their participation in the Digital Waters PhD Pilot. If there is room, other PhD students and postdocs working on the Digital Waters Flagship program will be permitted to register. Postdocs can register for the course by sending an email to Elsa.Culler@oulu.fi.

Students must have access to a laptop or desktop computer with camera, mic, and audio and a stable internet connection.

Students from schools other than the University of Oulu (Åbo Akademi, University of Turku, Aalto University, University of Eastern Finland) will need to transfer the ECTs back to their home institution.

Education description

Introduction to data science methods for environmental analysis. Topics covered include reproducible scientific computing (bash scripting for data management, git for version control, GitHub for code collaboration and distribution); open geospatial data sources; common structures of environmental data; space/time applications of supervised machine learning (in R and Python); reproducible computational pipelines; repository design and publication; and best practices for high-performance computing using a JupyterHub virtual research environment.
