Enrollment and further information
The intended audience is doctoral researchers in the Digital Waters PhD Pilot program. Other MSc and PhD students from related programs may also register. Students participating in the Digital Waters PhD Pilot program will be accepted first if space is limited, followed by doctoral researchers in the Water, Energy, and Environmental Engineering program. Thereafter we will accept participants in order of registration.
Education description
Lecture topics will be:
- Day 1: Wilkinson’s Grammar of Graphics and its application to classic data visualizations in hydrologic sciences (time-series plots, maps, and statistical plots)
- Day 2: Universal design for accessible data visualizations
- Day 3: Software tools for data visualization, illustration, composite figures, and graphical abstracts
- Day 4 and 5: Interactive Data Storytelling with fabulation, temporal ontologies, and games
Learning outcomes:
ILO1: Implement classic data visualizations in hydrological sciences, using modern data sources and programming tools.
ILO2: Apply principles of graphic design, grammar of graphics, and human perception to data visualizations in hydrological sciences (including graphs, maps, composite figures, graphical abstracts, dashboards, and interactive engagement tools)
ILO3: Evaluate and select among the software options for data visualization for various applications
ILO4: Apply principles of universal design to create accessible data visualizations.
ILO5: Describe some examples of interactive data storytelling and how they can be used to engage stakeholders in research, design, planning, and fabulation
