2024/25 Global Education Monitoring Report: National Launch in Finland

Location
It looks at the visions and goals that are driving leadership in education and examines the extent and through what practices the exercise of leadership contributes to better education outcomes. External factors including social, cultural, governance conditions are looked at to see how they impact on effective leadership, as well as the policy levers that can be used to develop leadership skills in different contexts.
The launch of the UNESCO GEM Report is co-organized by the University of Oulu in collaboration with the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report Team, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID) and the Finnish National Commission for UNESCO.
This event provides an opportunity to review and discuss progress towards SDG Goal 4 both at the national and international level. The event also provides an opportunity to discuss not only about the role of school leaders and pedagogical leadership, but also about the leadership skills as part of teachers’ competences.

Prof. Maija Lanas
Maija Lanas (PhD) is a Professor of Education in the University of Oulu and the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. She is also a Docent of Teacher Education in the University of Helsinki.

Dr. Anna D’Addio (ac.daddio@unesco.org)
Anna D’Addio (PhD) is a Senior Policy Analyst in the Global Education Monitoring Report Team. She holds a Ph.D. in Quantitative Economics, a Doctorate in Public Economics and a master’s in Quantitative Economics.
Panelists
Ms. Kati Anttalainen
Kati Anttalainen is a Senior Ministerial Adviser at the International relations of the Ministry of Education and Culture. She is also a member of the Finnish Commission on UNESCO.
Pia Kola-Torvinen is a Counsellor of Education at the Finnish National Agency for Education. She has worked in education for over 20 years focusing on educational leadership and developing education and early childhood education.
Prof. Laura Hirsto
Laura Hirsto is a Professor of Education at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Eastern Finland. She holds the title of Docent in Educational Psychology at the University of Helsinki. Her research topics include the study of learning environments from the perspectives of learning processes and teaching and pedagogy.
Dr. Iina Soiri
Dr. Soiri is a Lead Technical Expert at Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) implementing EU Global Gateway Regional Teacher Initiative in Africa - based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ms. Adina Nivukoski
Adina Nivukoski is a 24 year old law student and the UN Youth Delegate of Finland, Equality Adviser and Columnist.
Commentary remarks
Dr. Matthew Thomas on behalf of Mr. Carlos Vargas. Dr. Thomas is a Programme Specialist at UNESCO. He works together with Carlos Vargas at the Section for teacher development, secretariat for the International Taskforce on Teachers for Education 2030, division for Policies and Lifelong Learning systems.

Prof. Salla Atkins
Prof. Salla Atkins is the Chairperson of the Board for the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID). Salla Atkins is also a Social Scientist and Professor of Public Health (especially Global Health) at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Tampere.
