The Arctic Five Chairs program is a part of a university collaboration between five universities in the Fennoscandinavian Arctic – The University of Oulu and The University of Lapland in Finland, Luleå University of Technology and Umeå University in Sweden, and UiT-The Arctic University of Norway. Together, these universities represent the most comprehensive research and education infrastructure in the European Arctic, including over 10,000 researchers and 90,000 students. The aim of our partnership is to use cross-border cooperation as a tool for achieving ground-breaking research and education in support of responsible and sustainable development in the Arctic and beyond. Our combined and complementary strengths make us a strong knowledge hub and together we make our voices heard on the global Arctic arena.
The Arctic Five Chairs program is the main tool for stimulating collaboration in research and education within the Arctic Five, building on bottom-up initiatives from excellent scholars at our universities and beyond. In June 2022, the Arctic five appointed 15 Arctic Five chairs. At the symposium on June 8, we will present ongoing Arctic Five chairs projects that in different ways deal with opportunities and challenges pertaining to the green transition industrialization in the European Arctic, on themes such as city planning, land use conflicts, indigenous rights, demography, health and cultural heritage.
