Brown Bag seminar: Catalysis and competencies for a sustainable future

We are living in a time of complexly intertwined problems that cannot be solved by addressing the challenges separately. To achieve a sustainable future, we need to develop a host of solutions ranging from technical to social and from individual to society-wide and make them work together towards a shared goal. What part does catalysis as a production process play in sustainable development? How can competencies of students be a part of the solution? What can these very different approaches learn from one another, and can they be used in dialogue to reach a more sustainable future?

Welcome to the Brown Bag seminar of the Sustainable Development Week on Wed 24th of September in Tellus Backstage to hear what solutions different approaches offer to sustainable development and to discuss how the complex problems of our time can be addressed in a more integrated and holistic way. The speakers in this seminar are Associate Professor Satu Ojala from the Environmental and Chemical Engineering Research Unit working with the H2Future research programme and Postdoctoral Researcher Yared Demssie from the Education, Diversity, Globalisation and Ethics Research Group working with the research area of Values, Ideologies and Social Contexts of Education.

Associate Professor Ojala will talk about alternative raw materials for catalysts to address the scarcity and expensiveness of materials used in catalysts. She will also ask if catalysts really can be sustainable.

Postdoctoral Researcher Demssie will approach sustainable development from the point of view of competencies. What competencies are needed for sustainable development and how could they be achieved?

The seminar will take place on Wednesday 24th of September from 11 am to 12 pm at Tellus Backstage on Linnanmaa campus. Lunch will be provided for those who register by Monday 22nd of September at 12 pm. The seminar will be in English.

If you cannot make it to the Linnanmaa campus, you can also participate via Zoom. If you participate via Zoom, you don’t need to register for the event.

Note UniOGS Doctoral Researchers: You can add Brown Bag Seminars in your personal learning plan and once you have attended 10 Brown Bag Seminars, you can get 0,5 credits of doctoral studies.
