Is there a connection between Gentile’s philosophy and his fascism? Many have thought there was; but was his fascism the logical outcome of his philosophy? This paper will examine a particular paper by Gentile, ‘The Transcending of Time in History’, relating it both to his theory of mind as pure act and also to R.G. Collingwood’s evaluation both of this paper and of Gentile’s attitude to fascism.
