Exhibitions and culture stands open at Festival center of Tellus and the main corridor, 10-14

• Visit stands, meet new people from all around the world, and learn bits and pieces of different cultures!

Event info point open 10-14 at the campus main lobby, green coat racks

• Get the event programme, event pass and map of the event area from the info point! Complete tasks, go around the culture booths and fill up your event pass. By returning a full event pass, you receive a limited-edition exclusive event patch as a reward!
• If you are an exchange, degree, or doctoral student at the University of Oulu, you can answer the International Student Barometer at the info stand. All survey respondents get a special International UniOulu patch and are entered into a raffle where we’ll give out 5 series of 5 movie tickets!

African Culture Festival, 10.00-11.30 & 13–13.30 at Tellus Stage

Take part in traditional African games and get to know the cultural artifacts of the rich and diverse African cultures. Listen to country speeches about the unique and interesting parts of different African cultures. The African festival will also offer food tastings for visitors and perform various energetic music and dance forms of the continent!

The African Festival is supported by the internal Talent Boost funding call for community events.

Keynote speech: What do we do for diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Oulu?, Taina Cooke, Tellus Aspire 10:30.

Diversity is a key concern for universities. Promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education is essential to achieving social justice and reducing structural inequities. Fostering diversity and inclusion also benefits research, learning and talent attraction. What do we do at the University of Oulu to combat inequalities (e.g. racism and sexism) and to strengthen the sense of belonging for all? What kind of structures and practices do we have in place already and where can we do better? Come, listen, and share your thoughts!

Vietnamese music and dances: "Breath of time", at Festival center of Tellus, 11.00 -11.30

Come and join us in a flashmob-style performance with different Vietnamese music from soft folk songs to modern young dance.

Sri Lankan Folk Music and Cultural Garments, Tellus Brisk, 11.00 -12.00

Come by to Brisk to enjoy the folk rhythms of Sri Lankan music. During this time, you can also try on traditional Sri Lankan costumes and snap a photo of yourself in the outfits!

Live music: Songs from the Isles, Kevin Lyons, at Festival center of Tellus 12.00-12.20

The folk music of Ireland and Britain have been an important part of tradition for centuries, with the words and melodies often being passed on from one singer to the next, from generation to generation, without ever being written down. Kevin Lyons will perform traditional love songs, ballads, and wistful meditations on the passing of time.

Japanese Mizuhiki workshop at Tellus Aspire, 12.00-13.00

Try out traditional ornament-making and enjoy the Japanese atmosphere! Welcome to making Japanese ornaments with Japanese students!

Workshop for line managers, teachers and staff (in Finnish), at Frost club, 12.30-13.30

Tools for supporting Finnish learning - a workshop for line managers, teachers and colleagues in an international university community (In Finnish!)

This workshop will give the participants some practical tools and tips on how to enhance language awareness in a multi-lingual workplace. We will get to know the steps in language learning, language-HOPS (study plan), and practice how to communicate clearly (=selkokieli). The goal of this workshop is to give tools for accommodating different levels of language proficiency at work and support the learning of Finnish in teaching and guiding as well as in the workplace in general. The workshop is aimed at the staff of the University of Oulu. The workshop is held in Finnish. No pre-registration is required!

Vietnamese traditional lantern workshop, at Tellus Chill, 12.30-13.00

In this 30-minute workshop, you will be able to learn a quick snapshot of opportunities and what Vietnam can offer as a destination for internships and study. Also, learn how to make a beautiful Vietnamese-style lantern to light up your room.

Traditional Iranian Music performance, at Tellus Stage, 12.30-13.00

Get to know Iranian culture and its traditions while listening to the enthralling sounds of the traditional Iranian instrument Santour.

Chinese Tea Ceremony Experience at Brisk, 13.00-13.30

Enjoy your afternoon with a Chinese Tea experience, tasting Chinese teas with Chinese students!

Bulgarian Dance ХОРО performance, at Festival Center of Tellus, 12.30-13.30

Get immersed into Bulgarian traditions via music and traditional dance!

Pakistani presentation, Tellus Stage, 13.30-14.00

Let’s explore Pakistani culture by tasting traditional tea and listening to interesting insights into the culture.

Accessibility
The Linnanmaa campus area of the University of Oulu is accessible. There is an unobstructed passage through main door 2T to the event. Accessible toilets can be found e.g. near the R entrance. For more info, see the campus map (pdf).

The bus stop is located on Erkki Koiso-Kanttilan katu in front of entrance 2T. The bus stop at Linnanmaa's main entrance 2T is called “University”. Bus schedules on the website of public transport in Oulu.

There is plenty of room in our bicycle parking areas around the campus.

You can park at Erkki Koiso-Kanttilan katu and Yliopistokatu (P1 and P2) on the day of the event. Please note that parking is subject to charge. Map of Linnanmaa (pdf)
