The "Kymmenen tuhannen virran maa – Suomen unohdetut ja uhanalaiset pienvedet" presentation reveals how freshwater ecosystems have changed over time and the methods used to restore aquatic environments to an improved ecological state. Special attention is given to small waters, such as streams and springs – often overlooked, yet invaluable habitats for biodiversity. The talk examines the drivers of aquatic biodiversity and how human activity and environmental changes are shaping these ecosystems, both now and in the future.

Professor Timo Muotka is Professor of Aquatic Ecology at the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit, University of Oulu. He is one of the university’s most distinguished ecologists, with expertise focusing on biodiversity loss and the restoration of stream ecosystems, as well as stream-forest interactions in boreal streams. Together with his research group, he has successfully integrated the strengths of long-term ecological monitoring and experimental research in his projects.

Professor Muotka’s research has significantly influenced both international ecological studies and practical water management. He has supervised nearly 30 doctoral theses, and his former students hold key expert and research positions both in Finland and internationally. Muotka is also a member of the Finnish Scientific Panel on Forest Bioeconomy. His work demonstrates how high-level research can guide the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems.

The event is open to everyone. The language of the event is Finnish.

The Kaitera Talks 2026 speaker series is part of the University of Oulu’s 2026 cultural programme and the Oulu2026 Art&Tech week schedule.
