Join us as we celebrate Ramadan across countries, cultures, and histories at the University of Oulu, as part of the university’s Oulu2026 official culture program and the larger “Terve Ramadan” week.

Across the world, Ramadan is often a time for peace, togetherness, hospitality, and community building. At this event, we aim to capture and share some of these global cultural traditions, creating a welcoming space where people from all backgrounds can socialize, learn, and celebrate the spirit of Ramadan together. The event is open to the public and is family and child-friendly.

The event is divided into two parts:

  1. Time: 15:00 – 17:15

    Location: Tellus Stage, Backstage, Frost

    Open to everyone

The first part of the event offers an introduction to Ramadan and Eid, and highlights how they are celebrated across countries, cultures, and histories.

Come listen to informational sessions and discussions, learn new facts, and test your knowledge through trivia games with prizes at Tellus Stage. There will be multicultural activities and arts and crafts for all ages inspired by global Ramadan traditions, as well as the opportunity to socialize, connect, and exchange cultural experiences in a relaxed setting.

Pass by the cultural booths at Tellus Backstage and encounter the diverse tastes, perspectives, and experiences of celebrating Ramadan and Eid around the world.

Children can enjoy age-appropriate activities and crafts in Tellus Frost.

Everyone is welcome to join, learn new things, and share the joy together!

  2. Time: 17:15 – 18:45

    Location: Mustikka Restaurant

    Pre-registration required (register here)

The second part of the event brings people together to “break fast” (Iftar) at sunset with a communal potluck dinner. The evening includes sharing dates at the start of the meal, a diverse potluck buffet featuring dishes and flavors from different cultures and cuisines, and socialization. This event is not just about sharing a meal; it's about sharing experiences, cultures, and creating bonds within our diverse community.

Please note that capacity is limited for this part of the event, and advance registration is required. We will try to ensure that as many diverse cultures and countries as possible have the chance to attend. Each participant brings a dish to the potluck, which is specified in the registration form.

We look forward to celebrating together the cultural diversity of Ramadan and the joy of community!

Additional information:

  • This event is held on University premises and follows the University rules, regulations, and ethical principles. Please make sure to familiarize yourself with these and adhere to them.
  • For the bold and daring who like a challenge, you can give fasting a try (even if for a few hours)! Fasting takes place from dawn until sunset and involves abstaining from eating and drinking. It is a time for reflection, purification, and self-improvement, and generally involves performing good deeds (e.g., being kind, helping others, doing community service, and giving charity). Come and discuss your fasting experience!

This event is part of the University of Oulu’s 2026 culture programme and Terve Ramadan week that is part of the official Oulu2026 programme.
