Rationale for the course

Getting published in high-quality journals requires outstanding academic writing skills, especially in journals focusing on highly competitive topics such as sustainability or circular economy. This workshop-style post-graduate article writing workshop will complement the course offering of the doctoral degree programmes by concentrating on top journals published in the fields of sustainability, circular economy and digitalization.

The participants will have an understanding of the requirements and the review process of selected journals based on the extensive experience of the course visiting professor Yang Liu (Linköping University, Sweden) as a reviewer and journal editor. In addition, they will be provided with practical writing tips and instructions that they can apply in their own academic writing to be able to continuously improve their publishing performance.

Objectives and learning outcomes

The course is an intensive course based on interactive lectures and hands-on workshop, taking place on 10th to 11th May, 2022. The participants do a pre-assignment to prepare themselves. During the course, the workshop method will allow for the participants to work on their own manuscripts based on the course learnings. After the course they will apply the learnings for their own work-in-progress manuscripts aimed for publication as a required assignment for receiving 2 ECTS credits for the course. Hybrid delivery of the lecture parts will be available, but the participants are encouraged to take part in person, as the workshop method will require active participation. Upon completion of the course, the participants:

  • Will have in-depth knowledge about the requirements of publishing a manuscript in high-quality journals and about ways to improve their own writing skills
  • Will be able to apply the workshop learnings to their own academic writing assignments

This course will give the attendees a fundamental overview of how to prepare high-quality manuscripts to meet the requirements of submitting to high-quality journals, especially for those who did not receive training in academic writing. This course is beyond the traditional academic writing course which also includes everything else needed for publishing on high-quality journals (submission, revision, responding to editor/reviewers, etc.). The teacher will share his own precious experiences and shortcuts of preparing and publishing high-quality manuscripts from the perspectives of a high standard author, reviewer and editor. Also, the teacher will discuss with individual attendees how to improve their ongoing manuscripts.
