Can AI be used in studies? Familiarise yourself with the updated guidelines

The University of Oulu’s guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence in education explain how you can use AI responsibly in your studies. The guidelines have been updated, so now is a good time to review the shared principles.

What should students know?

  • AI is a support tool for learning; it does not replace your own thinking, practice or competence. Content produced by AI must not be presented as your own.
  • Follow the teacher’s instructions: the teacher defines what kind of AI use is permitted on a course. If you are unsure, ask the teacher.
  • Act responsibly and ethically: consider data security, copyright, and possible errors in AI-generated content.
  • Develop your AI literacy, as AI is already part of current and future working-life skills.

What is changing?

  • We are introducing the so-called traffic light model, which helps to clarify what kind of AI use is permitted on a course. Teachers can also add the traffic light model to Moodle.
  • The guidelines state that if a student has a recommendation for individual study arrangements that includes the use of technical aids for writing, it is recommended that the student is allowed to use generative AI as an aid.
  • The guidelines have been updated to include, as a background document, instructions on the use of generative AI in research.
