International students and talent as drivers of regional vitality – Insights from the Spring Forum for Higher Education International Affairs
The programme explored the future of European higher education, the attraction and retention of international talent, education export, and solutions that strengthen links between higher education, working life, and student mobility. A recurring theme throughout the event was that attracting international students is only part of the equation; supporting their employment prospects and long-term integration into local communities is equally important.
According to Education Designer Elisa Mejías, one of the most valuable aspects of the event was the opportunity to exchange views with colleagues, particularly Team Finland Knowledge (TFK) experts working in different parts of the world.
“It was fascinating to hear regional updates and discuss key developments directly with the experts, including opportunities for double degree programmes outside Europe,” she says. “It also became clear that, from a national perspective, we are already quite advanced in several areas at OBS. For example, we offer a wide range of mobility opportunities for both students and staff through our mobility windows and other international programmes.”
Education Designer Nina Ihme also highlighted the value of the discussions and the new perspectives gained during the event.
“The event gave me ideas on how we could further strengthen support for international students throughout their entire journey, from the application stage to graduation, and help them integrate more smoothly into Finnish society and working life,” she explains.
Nina emphasises that the importance of a seamless student journey, high-quality international programmes, and proactive development work as important factors in international attractiveness.
