Kirsi Latola, Thule Institute, awarded with highest recognition in UArctic
Arctic Congress Bodø 2024, a joint event combining UArctic Congress, ICASS and High North Dialogue, was closed on June 1 with award ceremonies. These included awards given by congress organisers University of Arctic (UArctic), International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) and High North Dialogue. In the ceremony UArctic awarded Dr Kirsi Latola, UArctic Vice President Networks and research coordinator at Thule Institute, with UArctic President’s Service Award, the highest award given in UArctic.
In her speech to Kirsi, UArctic President Lars Kullerud, thanked her for organising the scientific programs in all UArctic Congresses since the first one was held in 2016. President Kullerud also acknowledged the excellent work Kirsi has conducted in building UArctic’s thematic networks for almost 20 years.
In her thanking speech Kirsi noted that when she started to work in UArctic in 2005, she had very narrow understanding of Arctic, and that “working in the UArctic has changed my understanding of Arctic, its Peoples and cultures, diversity, but also the challenges faced at the moment. UArctic has made me what I am today”.
