MP Tytti Tuppurainen encourages students to be themselves

Member of Parliament and Chair of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group Tytti Tuppurainen visited Oulu Business School's Management and Organizations course in September. In her lecture, she shared her professional story, from being an active young person to becoming a minister.

The purpose of the course’s guest lectures is to bring practical perspectives on leadership and organizations from different sectors of society. Tytti Tuppurainen’s talk brought to life phenomena that are otherwise discussed from a theoretical angle in the course.

During the lecture, it became clear that Tuppurainen’s desire to influence society began in her youth through themes of recycling and a nature association. Her most recent career phase as an opposition leader has taken her outside her comfort zone, highlighting the importance of staying true to one’s own values.

“You have to maintain a connection to your own values,” she explains.

She also expressed gratitude for her German language studies at the University of Oulu. Knowing the language has helped her understand German culture and ways of thinking, which in turn has been useful in various high-level negotiations.

At the end of the lecture, the MP emphasized the importance of perseverance and patience to students. As an example, she referred to her own journey to Parliament: she gained a seat after 11 years of trying.

“But that doesn’t mean you can’t live your normal life and at the same time advance the issues and goals that are important to you,” she reminded them.

Authenticity matters

Tytti Tuppurainen is not only a University of Oulu alumna and a member of the board of the Martti Ahtisaari Institute, but also an experienced front-line politician. But what was it like to share her own professional story with business students?

“It was certainly different to give this kind of talk. Usually, I speak about topics that require expertise in a specific area,” Tuppurainen says.

“I like to justify things with history. Opening up my own life and approaching it retrospectively is a new experience for me. Going through these things also sparks new insights – for example, how important the feeling of authenticity is,” she continues.

The course coordinator, Postdoctoral Researcher Kaisu Jansson, was especially pleased with the students’ courage to ask questions and engage in discussion.

“I already knew she was a good speaker, and because how well the autumn semester starts can have a big impact on new students’ commitment to their studies, such inspiring talks are especially important.”

First-year business student Jonna Myllynen, who moved from Uusimaa to Oulu, listened to the MP’s lecture with interest.

“It’s great to hear what kind of career path an experienced professional has had and how even a small idea can carry you far,” she reflected.
